|
| As the program begins we are told that tonight there will be no teacher vote. Sighs of relief from the teaching panel, gasps of despair from the students! The public vote will propel two of the students to the final and the lucky two will then vote to decide the fate of the two remaining students. |
Song: "I don't want a lover" (Texas) |
| Carolynne is first under the spotlight tonight. First of all we see the video clip of her "emotional rollercoaster" of a week... ("emotional rollercoaster"... are we talking 'Fame Academy' here?) |
| We see a happy Carolynne laughing uncontrollably and next we see a sad Carolynne sobbing inconsolably on the phone to her dad. He tries to motivate his little girl telling her "Give it large and keep focused" , but his words fall on deaf tears and they roll down her cheek. |
| Jeremy provides a listening ear for Caz as she refutes the idea that her relationship with Peter is a distraction. "If anything he's kept me a little bit sane" she says. Caz explains that the she only really gets distracted when she remembers she has to sing live again to keep her place at the Academy. |
| The lady from Leeds takes to the stage wearing black, adorned with a sparkling jewelled crucifix necklace. She does give it large and her dad watches on admiringly. The performance ends, is she about to face her second crucifixion of the night? |
| Well, not quite, but she certainly gets a rockier reception from the panel than usual. |
| On the plus side David ("she sang it brilliantly") and Carrie ("you sang your heart and soul") agree that she gave a great performance. |
| On the minus side, Richard Park tells her "I don't think it's convincing, I can't see you making an album." Quite a change from his positive comments of recent weeks, and Robin agrees, he doesn't think that the performance will be good enough to take her through to the final. |
| Caz is undaunted, "you know what, I thought that was wicked for me! " she proclaims to cheers all round. |
Song: "Something" (The Beatles) |
| Peter's video clip features his famous fracas with Kevin. It all blows up on Tuesday when Pete turns up late for his dance class, toast in hand. Pete is tired, Kevin is angry, next Pete is angry and Kevin is tired of Pete. All in all, a badtempered affair which drains their well of mutual respect. |
| Carolynne gives him a comforting hug and we can see how the stress of the Academy has gotten to Pete as he weeps on her shoulder. Poor Pete, one has to feel for him. As he explains to Jeremy in the clip, he's "really run down, just really run down, emotional as well". |
| He begins his song. For his first time in a live show he doesn't prance around like a crazy person. He seems to be channelling the week's emotion into his delivery. He gives an intense, sometimes Gallagheresque performance, very reflective and in keeping with the song. Okay, he misses an odd note here or there, but he does manage to strike a chord. |
| It's over to the panel and by his own standards, Peter takes a bit of a bashing. |
| Richard Park is unimpressed, "out of tune singing is okay...but after a while it really is fatiguing" , although Richard concedes that semi-final nerves may not be helping any. Carrie feels that only the second half of Peter's performance was good. David thinks Peter has star potential but he is a bit disappointed with Peter's tuning and Robin says Peter was good but not outstanding. |
| It's over to Claudia at BBC 3 for her take on the week. |
| This begins with an update on how Carolynne and Pete have been getting on. The pair are shown getting closer during the week. Both of them express concerns over whether their relationship is being viewed negatively by the public, but that doesn't deter them from then seeking out a private little nook away from the cameras, somewhere they can...well we don't really know what! Goodness gracious! |
| It's the next day and we eavesdrop Peter receiveing another awkward phone call from his girlfriend, who is obviously unhappy about his recent antics. It is uncomfortably compelling to watch, she reminds him that "…when all this madness and stuff comes out…you know you'll need people like me". |
| In more cheerful vein we are treated to the students "vote for me" appeals which they each have recorded during the week. |
| "Vote for me because I'll go mad if I'm not in the final ha ha haaaaa" pleads a curiously pregnant maniac. We think it might Peter but it's hard to tell because he's wearing a moustache! It's hilarious. Monster raving-tastic! |
| Carolynne has a different pitch "the price of a phone call is less than the price of a packet of crisps." Yes, Caz but we love our crisps too! |
| Alistair's campaign has showbiz appeal. He enlists Robin Gibb (or is it Alistair Gibb) who 'bigs him up', and entertains us with some lovely dancing ( a la David Brent!) and we begin to wonder 'how did he get into this Academy in the first place?'. |
| Li'l Alex's campaign has an ounce of logic, "I'm fed up of living in a £35 million mansion that isn't mine! So vote for me so I'm successful enough to get my own!". Yes, that makes sense to us Alex! |
| Finally we see Peter and Carolynne at the Capitol Gold awards ceremony. It's a big do with some major luminaries in attendance. Pete takes it in his stride, he even cracks a joke, presenting an award to himself! Caz seems a little more excited, and seems to get a bit wobbly-kneed as she notices Paul Young standing nearby. After the event Pete gets a welcome jab in the arm when he meets Bob Geldof. Sir Bob explains that it's his daughters' votes that are keeping Pete in the Academy! |
Song: "I'm not in love" (10 CC) |
| It's back to the competition and it's time to take a look at Alex's week. |
| At the start of the week Alex is missing her friends and family, but as the week progresses, and she and Alistair get to 'hang out' more, her mood lightens. We even see them having a tumble together on the lawn! (Okay, not quite a 'tumble together', perhaps more of more a 'side by side' tumbling race - this is being screened before 9pm don't forget!). |
| The only fly in Alex's ointment seems to be her irritation with Carolynne and Peter, who she feels are becoming a bit of an exclusive twosome. During the songwriting class, as Caz and Pete share giggles and seem to have eyes only for eachother, Alex decides she's had enough. She ups and leaves them and joins Alistair to have a grumble about the situation. |
| With the Videoclip over, Alex graces the stage, in her khaki jeans, bright yellow top and spiky hairdo she delivers the 10CC classic. Her nerves are surprisingly evident as she begins the song, you can detect an uncharacteristic tremble in her voice. As she gets into the song she seems recover well, and overall it's a pleasing performance, if not one of her best. |
| Judgement time comes and the panel are forgiving. Richard Park describes her as "brilliant" and says she is "the only one in this competition with a natural God-given talent". Carrie quickly jumps in to defend the God-given talents of the all students, including Alex.. She praises the way that Alex thinks about a song "from an emotional point of view". David and Robin remark on Alex's nerves, but they agree that it was still a good performance.
|
Song: "Jealous Guy" (John Lennon) |
| Last up to sing is 'dark horse' Alistair. |
| The video of Alistair's week begins with an amusing sequence. First we see a guilt-ridden Ali, trying to rationalise why he had voted for Peter over James. Next Alistair is seen gazing wistfully at James's now vacant bed, followed by some slow motion shots of the twosome's good times together at the Academy, all soundtracked by Barbara Streisand singing "Memories", it's a magically comical Fame Academy moment. |
| Alistair hoping to prove his doubters wrong this week, gets up and gives an emotional rendition of Jealous Guy. |
| Carrie says he sounded great, Robin thinks it was one of his's best performances, David disagrees saying it was 'the best' performance Alistair has given. This is sounding good! On to Richard who describes Alistair's performance as "Dull, bland, uninspiring, adenoidal". Hmmm. |
| Peter and Carolynne |
Song: "I only want to be with you" (Dusty Springfield)
|
| Alex and Alistair
|
Song: "Everybody's Talking" (Harry Nilsson) |
| All the students (Finale)
|
Song: "California Dreaming" (The Mamas And The Papas) |
|
| The students work isn't over yet, they have to performs 2 duets that they've rehearsed during the week. |
| Pete and Caz sing Dusty Springfield's "I only want to be with you". Caz almost laughs out loud as Pete forgets his lyrics and has to improvise with some of his own words. It's not really a polished performance but they do seem to be enjoying themselves! |
| Alex and Alistair follow up with Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin'". It's not a bad vocal performance, though at times they look a bit mechanical as they move around the stage. As they finish, they give one another a nice warm hug. |
| It's over to the panel once more. |
| David seems to like both duets but slightly prefers Carolynne and Peter's. Robin prefers Alex and Alistair's. Carrie remarks that there was more chemistry in Caz and Pete's duet, but she eventually agrees with Richard Park that both performances were "really poor" because the students have been concentrating on their solo songs. |
| With all the judgement's dispensed with, a group finale beckons. All four students sing California Dreaming (originally a 60s hit for the Mamas and the Papas). During which Peter treats us to a few energetic jigs. When it ends they all group hug eachother. |
| They must be relieved it's all over, but it's not quite over. It's down to the we, the public, now. Who will go through? And who will miss out on the final week at the Academy? |
