Lorna Grant - I'll give it everything that I've got!
From: Bathgate, West Lothian (Nr Edinburgh)
Bathgate bairn Lorna wasn't expecting too much when she started auditioning for the Academy, she just thought she'd "give it a go". Lorna has a sense of humour and a bubbliness that shines through. She says she sings wherever she is, even in the toilet!
In the preliminary auditions she sang Phil Collins' "Take A Look At Me Now." David and Carrie obviously did, because they put her through to the final televised auditions.
Lorna had previously made it to the final of the Daily Record's Big Break 192 singing competition in 2002 and back in 2000 she performed on the BBC show "Star for a Night".
Lorna's favourite singer is Celine Dion and like Celine, Lorna loves to perform. She attended the Forefront Stage School in Alloa from when she was 8. When she was 19 she spent a year in London, honing her talent at the London School of Musical Theatre.
David describes Lorna's voice as "amazingly powerful" but commented that "she's only got one gear and that's overdrive". He believes that she needs to find more gears so that "her voice doesn't sound too theatrical.".
For the televised audition show Lorna sang "Say What You Want" the Texas classic. The critiques from the panel didn't start off too well "…the whole package, I think it's very middle of the road" decried David Grant. Lorna showed her plucky side by politeliy reminding David "that's why we're here, we're not here to be the end package, we've got to (go through a) process…". Richard Park was more positive though "I wouldn't underestimate that performance, that sounded to me like a voice that could be trained up into being something special."
In the end Lorna entered the Academy on the student vote. Up against fellow hopeful Terence Surin, Lorna got all 12 student votes. Touchingly, Lorna remarked after the show "I wanted it so much but I felt bad for Terence. I think if I had been in his place I would have crumbled".
Now that she's made it into the Academy Lorna is keen to develop as a performer and promises "I'll give it everything that I've got".
Lorna was the third student to be expelled from the Academy (on Saturday 16 August 2003).
