Gary Phelan - Born To Perform
Date of Birth: 23rd June 1982
He's the cheeky chappie from Cramlington but 21 year old Gary is also an accomplished and serious songwriter with boy band experience.
Gary has always been passionate about his music and says he was "born to peform". He used to play piano at school assemblies, later he would enter talent shows at Metroland in Gateshead alongside another hopeful Cheryl Tweedy (of Girls Aloud) who found success last year on ITV's Pop Stars.
Prior to Fame Academy his biggest break was as a member of boy band 3NM. It was with 3NM that Gary played support to top acts including Steps and Atomic Kitten in front of crowds as big as 20,000.
We at FameAcademyWatch think Gary bears a strong similarity to the young Tony Curtis. With his youthful good looks and laddish charm Gary has an obvious appeal for the younger female viewers. However Gary hopes to appeal to a wider audience who appreciate him for his musical talents above everything else.
In his audition show we saw how Gary's ankle had just recovered after he broke it falling off the roof at a party! With crazy antics like that and a confidence sometimes bordering on cockiness, the signs are that Gary will have no problem assuming the mantle of a rock 'n' roll star should he end up going "all the way" at the Academy!
(To Richard Park) "I was singing it to all the gorgeous people out there - and you're not one of them."
Gary was the fourth student to be expelled from the Academy (on Wednesday 20 August 2003).
Gary is planning to move to London soon and hopes to be working with the Fame Academy's songwriting coach John McLaughlin on a new album. He appeared on Claudia's BBC three show on Thursday (18th September 2003) with John and ex-Academian Lorna Grant and closed the show with a number that he and John had penned earlier that day.
