Barry McKeever - The Barryness of Barry
From: Craigavon, Northern Ireland
| A year ago Barry didn't really know that he had a great voice. After singing Karaoke he was encouraged by friends to take it further. He received more confirmation of his vocal skills after he successfully entered a local talent competition. | |
Since then Barry has started to believe in himself as a singer. He believed that getting into the Fame Academy would be the perfect way to develop and learn as an artist. Barry in fact didn't 'make it through' when he attended the Belfast auditions. Undaunted, he decided he would travel to Glasgow and put himself up for audition there. His determination paid off and Barry was chosen to go through to the next stage.
David Grant described Barry's voice as "heart-melting", although he thinks Barry needs to think about his image more. Barry joked at the audition show that he would get rid of the hairnet! (He was seen wearing a fetching hairnet in his video clip).
One thing is for sure, Barry has the famous Irish wit and he's promised us he will definitely have fun at the Academy. Barry is a great fan of Robbie Williams and wants to be the "Robbie Williams of Ireland".
In the audition show he sang The Stereophonics "Handbags and Gladrags", a song which suited the gravelly tones in his voice. The panel all appreciated his vocal performance. David said he felt that when Barry sings a song, he sounds like the original artist, The vocal coach wants Barry to sound like himself. As David memorably put it, the main quest should be to find "The Barryness of Barry".
Happily for Barry, the public are keen to find out what that means. They voted him into the Academy, so the quest begins!
Barry was the seventh student to be expelled from the Academy (on Sunday 07 September 2003).
